Hunts Point, une zone industrielle du Bronx, sur les rives de l’East River. Entre une immense prison ottante et une usine de condi- tionnement de déchets, se trouve le nouveau marché aux poissons. Un ballet de chariots élévateurs, de palettes et de lets de thon. Perdus au milieu de nulle part, les hommes qui y travaillent racontent leur histoire, entretenant tant bien que mal la légende du métier.

Hunts Point, an industrial area in the Bronx, on the banks of the East River. Between a huge floating prison and a waste packaging plant, lies the new fish market. A ballet of forklifts, pallets and tuna fillets. Lost in the middle of nowhere, the men who work there tell their stories, keeping the legend of the trade alive as best they can.

« An atmospherically immersive and unfussily informative portrait of working lives in an obscure corner of the Bronx, Bx46 introduces a pair of strong documentary talents in French duo Jeremie Brugidou and Fabien Clouette. Carefully self-effacing, Brugidou and Clouette eschew overt editorializing — no voiceover, no expository titlecards — but their points are eloquently conveyed in a film that can seek and find beauty in the most unlikely of places. Colors are an eye-catchingly bold array of pungent primary hues, harshly illuminated by electric light in strong contrast to the night skies which look down over these round-the-clock enterprises. The directors’ eye for revealing detail and telling incident is sharp — as when a barrel of crabs is knocked over, allowing its crustace-aninmates a desperate, brief, doomed break for freedom.»
