PROJETS
OFF SEASON

PITCH

FR

Off Season is the project of filming the Adriatic coast, a mecca of European seaside tourism, during its off season.
It is said that on November 21, light pierces through a loophole in the Basilica of Porec, to illuminate the face of St. Mauro, the local patron saint. We start from this image and highlight the faces of the Istriots who make this territory something other than a coast ravaged by mass tourism, a precious territory, with rich pictures of a quiet season.

The city of Porec, on the Istrian coast of the Adriatic, is placed under the Christian patronage of Saint Mauro. This is celebrated on November 21, with the arrival of the winter season. A large part of the city flocks to the basilica for the mass in his honor. The basilica, which is a mecca for heritage tourism in the region during the summer, once again becomes a space for the locals. In the monument, it is said that on this date, a ray of sunlight enters through a skilfully placed loophole to caress the face of Saint Mauro, which then lights up.

During our scouting, we were able to observe the embodiment of this fable in the seasonality of the territory. At the same time, in mid-November, the bura, the north wind, sets off and freezes the landscape, chasing away the summer people. At the same time, a ray of sunshine illuminates the Istrian winter and its inhabitants, who find the calm of the season without tourists.

This correspondence between the myth of Saint Mauro and the life of Istria imposed itself on us as an obvious axis of writing, especially since we met Sasa, a luminous character, also mystical, who has everything of a Saint Mauro. It is this correspondence that we wanted to develop as a writing device for our documentary: a character rings, with a gong, the end of the tourist season and its exuberance; the landscapes and characters of the region come alive in a different way, caressed by a different light.
